Step by step: Start at 12. Count forward seven places: 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19. So 12 + 7 = 19.

A simpler example
5 + 2 means start at 5 and count two more: 6, 7. The answer is 7.
Another method
Make ten first: 12 + 7 = 12 + 3 + 4. Twelve plus three is 15, then four more is 19.
